A joint study by The University of Hong Kong and the London School of Economics releases a groundbreaking migration dataset in Nature, spanning 1990–2023. The team combines traditional flow theory with deep learning to interpolate annual migration flows for every country, integrating official statistics, census data, and socioeconomic indicators. The analysis shows global migration rising from about 13 million migrants annually in 2000 to roughly 35 million in 2023, outpacing population growth and revealing fluctuations tied to crises. The Middle East emerges as the largest recipient, with nearly 19 million migrants from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh relocating to GCC states since 2010.
