Haeran Ryu wins Evian Championship, her second major in 14 days
Haeran Ryu’s Evian Championship win underscored her rapid rise, delivering her second major in 14 days after a playoff thriller. The 25-year-old South Korean captured the Evian Amundi Championship on Sunday at Évian Resort Golf Club in France, following her June 28 victory at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. Ryu’s title came when her putting held up on the 18th hole and a par was enough to beat Japan’s Aki Iwai, while Canada’s Brooke Henderson forced the extra hole by nearly converting a second eagle attempt. Ryu entered Sunday as the clear favorite after shooting 60 on Saturday, a course and major record that put her three shots ahead of Iwai and seven in front of Henderson. The week also highlighted the pressure of Evian’s picturesque Lake Geneva setting and the fine margins behind her comeback.
