Heroic girl, 9, stops wildfire after blaze breaks out at cricket club

A nine-year-old girl’s quick actions helped stop a wildfire from spreading after a blaze broke out at Stockport Cricket Club in Stockport. Bar manager Rebecca Evans said her daughter, who plays junior cricket, ran inside while she was serving customers on 18 July to alert her to the fire. Evans called 999 and saw it growing, prompting children and spectators to be moved away as the game was halted for about 45 minutes. The cricket ground borders Cale Green Park, where the perimeter is partly hidden by bushes and people can gather unnoticed. The club has reported prior damage and vandalism, including racist graffiti.
