Kenya police fire tear gas, arrest ex chief justice at national park protest

Kenya police fire tear gas to disperse protesters opposing plans to build on part of Nairobi National Park. Authorities arrested at least nine people, including former Chief Justice David Maraga, outside the park’s main entrance, about 10 kilometers from Nairobi’s central business district. The Kenya Wildlife Service defends the project, saying it will expand an animal orphanage on the site. Protesters carried signs such as Nature is not vacant land as they voiced concerns that the development would encroach on Africa’s only wildlife reserve within a capital city. The plan also includes a parking area for more than 1,000 vehicles.
