Late Rally Falls Short As Baltimore Orioles Squander Brandon Young's Stellar Outing
A late rally fell short for the Baltimore Orioles against the Washington Nationals after starter Foster Griffin kept Baltimore’s offense largely in check. Baltimore trailed early and could not mount an attack against Griffin, who struck out nine batters over seven innings while allowing one unearned run. The Orioles responded later: with two outs in the eighth, Pete Alonso and Samuel Basallo delivered key hits to tie the game 3-3. However, Washington held on in extra innings and the Orioles failed to capitalize despite loading the bases in the 10th. Brandon Young stood out on the mound despite the loss, throwing five innings and allowing two runs while striking out a career-high eight; he recorded 23 whiffs, the most by an Orioles starter in nearly two decades. Young’s ERA was reported as 3.11, and he is set behind Kyle Bradish in Sunday’s rubber match.
