Thousands rally in western Germany against gas-fired power stations
Thousands of climate activists gathered in Hamm, western Germany, to protest gas-fired power stations. The rally banner read 'Future instead of gas – defend the energy transition,' and organizers criticized new gas plants while urging a quicker shift to renewables. Police counted about 2,700 participants, while organizers claimed up to 5,000. Germany plans gas-fired plants to ensure a stable supply during periods of low wind and sun after coal plants are decommissioned. After the demonstration, activists formed a wind-turbine silhouette on a former mining spoil tip. Organizers include Fridays for Future, Greenpeace, BUND and Campact. Nearby, a Climate Camp tent village was set up near the Gerstein power station to press for a faster transition to renewables.
