Niño prompts DA to seek P3B for irrigation
xCruzo Brief
The Philippines’ Department of Agriculture (DA) is asking for more than P3 billion to expand irrigation nationwide to blunt the effects of El Niño on farm output. Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa said the DA is seeking additional funding under the Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food and Transport (Uplift) program, aiming to deploy regular and mobile irrigation systems where water shortages are most acute. The government plans P2 billion for regular solar irrigation projects and P1 billion for mobile solar irrigation systems. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. wants mobile units released by December and most deployed by January, aligning with El Niño’s peak, and the DA will prioritize affected areas.
