Side before self has leapt from Leeds United lore into Scotland's World Cup narrative after Scotland beat Haiti 1-0 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Bremner, who earned 54 Scotland caps between 1965 and 1975, is also a Leeds icon, and the phrase adorns Elland Road's façade and sits beneath his statue. Scotland's kit manager Jim McAlister spearheaded the update, saying quotes from iconic Scots figures line the team hotel and training-ground walls. The origin of the line remains disputed; Bremner is associated, but records are unclear. Bremner made 773 Leeds appearances, during which the club won major honours.
