Since 1954, one travel club has insisted the world has 330 countries, not 193
xCruzo Brief
A long-running travel achievement argument refuses to die: the United Nations recognizes 193 countries, but the Travelers’ Century Club (TCC), a Los Angeles organization, has insisted on a figure of 330 since 1954. The difference comes down to how territories, islands and autonomous regions are counted. TCC membership requires visiting 100 of its 330 destinations in person—transit through an airport doesn’t count. The club’s record-year momentum is framed with recent outbound travel data, including 91.2% of respondents reporting a bucket list and 11.8 million U.S. citizens’ international departures in July 2026, up 2.3%. TCC, founded by Bert Hemphill, now has about 1,500 members.
