SpaceX Launches Are Changing How Families Vacation on South Padre Island
SpaceX launches are increasingly reshaping family vacations on South Padre Island, Texas, with booking surges tied to Starship lift-off windows at the nearby Starbase. South Padre Trips, a vacation rental management firm, says inquiries “go bonkers” once SpaceX announces a date, and that the best-selling properties are those with a direct line of sight from the south end. A Brownsville study cited in the report estimates Starbase generated about $10 billion in gross regional revenue since 2023, including roughly $99 million in visitor spending from launch-related tourism in 2025. Guests can sometimes watch launches from condo balconies as the pad sits about five miles from the island’s southern tip. Even scrubbed launches appear to boost stays, as visitors extend trips to avoid losing time. The island’s tourism bureau now promotes the area as the Texas Space Coast, while Starbase maintains an active Starship test schedule.
