Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón sets new Guinness World Record
Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón set a new Guinness World Record for the longest World Cup clean-sheet streak as Spain beat Austria 3-0. The match in Los Angeles on Thursday advanced Luis de la Fuente’s team to the round of 16, while Simón extended his scoreless minutes to 519, breaking the previous record of 518 minutes held by Italy’s Walter Zenga in 1990. Simón’s streak at the 2026 World Cup included shutouts against Austria, Cape Verde, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, and was added to earlier World Cup minutes: 120 against Morocco at Qatar 2022 and the final 39 minutes of a group loss to Japan. Spain’s goals came from Mikel Oyarzabal, Pedro Porro, and Oyarzabal again. Spain next faces Portugal in Dallas after Cristiano Ronaldo’s side beat Croatia 2-1.
