State sports briefs | Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports early results from the Maumelle Classic at Maumelle Country Club. On Friday, Luke Cornett of Drasco shot an 8-under-par 64 to take the first-round lead, highlighted by a streak of seven birdies over eight holes. Cornett, a 2019 champion, carded a 5-under 31 on the front nine and recorded bogeys only on the par-4 5th and the par-4 14th on the par-72 course. Jackson McCommon of Germantown, Tennessee, and Mitchell Ford of Little Rock are tied for second after shooting 5-under 67. Max Gipson of Cabot is solo fourth with 68, followed by Maumelle’s Haydn Robertson in fifth with 70. Andrew Hopkins sits sixth with 71, while Nickolas Zimmerman, the defending champion, leads a group of five tied for seventh on even-par 72. Second-round tee times begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, with the final round on Sunday.
