Villagers rally together to restore pond after 100 fish die during drought

Great Massingham is mobilizing to restore a pond after more than 100 carp died during weeks of hot, dry weather. The prolonged lack of rainfall dropped water levels and oxygen in one pond, home to birds, fish and insects and also a local fishing spot, and led to the fishing lakes being closed to the public last week. Although the pond is owned by Houghton Hall and is managed by the Great Massingham Parish Council, villagers have started emergency efforts. A long-reach digger is needed, with £5,000 due by August 17, while dredging began Monday using funding from the parish council and a GoFundMe page. A total of £50,000 is sought for the full works, expected to remove silt and reduce pollution and algae.
