White Sox promote top OF prospect Braden Montgomery
The Chicago White Sox promoted their prized outfield prospect Braden Montgomery from Triple-A Charlotte Tuesday, signaling a push to integrate a top asset from a 2024 deal with Boston. Montgomery, 23, is ranked No. 2 in Chicago’s system and No. 21 among all MLB prospects by MLB Pipeline, a reflection of both his ceiling and his performance. The switch-hitter carries a .314/.422/.548 line with 10 homers and 41 RBIs in 56 games split between Double-A Birmingham and Charlotte this season. Drafted 12th overall by the Red Sox out of Texas A&M in 2024, he could debut tonight as the White Sox begin a three-game homestand against the Atlanta Braves. The White Sox also recalled left-hander Joe Rock from Charlotte, optioned outfielder Rikuu Nishida and right-hander David Sandlin to Charlotte, and transferred outfielder Austin Hays to the 60-day injured list in corresponding moves.
Montgomery could join the lineup, as Chicago hosts Atlanta for a three-game series starting Tuesday. These adjustments illustrate the organization’s willingness to accelerate Montgomery’s timeline while preserving depth in a season that has demanded versatility from both its position players and its pitching staff. The roster shuffle aligns with a broader strategy to evaluate prospects under big-league pressures.
