White supremacists' July 4 march counts as free speech in 'messy democracy,' Interior Secretary Burgum says
White supremacists’ July 4 march in Washington is being framed by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum as protected “free speech” within a “messy democracy.” Burgum told CNN’s “State of the Union” that federal officials had no reason to stop the Patriot Front rally on Saturday, saying the hundreds of masked members did nothing illegal. While Burgum said he could not agree with the group’s white supremacist and anti-immigrant ideology, he argued critics of President Donald Trump also receive the same rights. The march moved from the National Mall near the U.S. Capitol and Union Station to a D.C. suburb via Metro. Burgum also addressed Trump administration efforts to renovate D.C. sites, including a controversial $14.7 million Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool project, citing unverified claims about vandalism.
