Asian shares retreat after strong profits lead a rally on Wall Street
Asian markets and U.S. stock futures fell broadly on Thursday after Wall Street’s rally, which had been boosted by strong earnings from companies including SpaceX and Capital One Financial. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 slid 1.6% to 63,595.58 as heavy selling hit tech names; SoftBank Group fell 5.6%, Tokyo Electron dropped 5.9%, and Advantest lost 5%. South Korea’s Kospi fell 2.6% to 5,586.89, led by declines in memory chip makers such as Samsung Electronics (-3.9%) and SK Hynix (-4.7%). AI-linked stocks were pressured amid concerns data-center buildouts could slow as borrowing costs rise. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropped 2.7%, while Shanghai Composite eased 0.9%. In the U.S., the S&P 500 rose 0.6%, the Dow gained 0.7% and Nasdaq climbed 1.1% following earnings beats, even as Netflix fell 5.3%.
