European Stocks Rise On Easing Inflation, Oil Price Decline
European equities ended firmer on Monday as concerns about inflation and interest rates eased, helped by a drop in oil prices. Sentiment also improved after reports that the U.S., under President Donald Trump, cancelled fresh military strikes and said there is a “good chance” of progress in talks to end months of fighting, including efforts to resolve deadlock over Strait of Hormuz transit fees and management. Brent crude fell to $81.55 per barrel before recovering to $83.90, still down more than 4.5% versus the prior close. The pan-European Stoxx 600 gained 0.45%. Germany’s DAX rose 1.45% and France’s CAC 40 added 1.22%. Sector and company moves included Siemens Healthineers up over 6% and Clarkson surging on record first-half profits, while AstraZeneca dropped nearly 9% after reports of discussions on a possible merger with Bristol Myers Squibb. IG Group fell 4.1%, with several other large names also lower or higher.
