Jackie and Shadow fled during Big Bear fireworks but returned to nest and eaglets the next day
Jackie and Shadow, two bald eagles, fled during Big Bear’s fireworks show but returned to their nest the next morning to care for their eaglets. On Sunday around 6 a.m., the chicks Luna and Sandy were seen safe near the family nest in a pine tree monitored by a livestream camera in Big Bear. Mom and dad flew off when the Fourth of July fireworks began Saturday night, according to Jennifer Voisard of Big Bear Valley media and website management. The event has been controversial among environmental advocates, who started a Change.org petition to move the festivities farther away or switch to a drone show; more than 45,000 people signed. A local nonprofit, Friends of Big Bear Valley, warned officials that if the parents stayed away, the eaglets—just days from flying—could be at risk. Despite the concerns, the parents returned.
