Keep blueberries fresh for longer with simple swap
Keeping blueberries fresh for longer hinges on reducing trapped moisture, which accelerates mould growth. Supermarkets often pack berries in plastic containers for easy stacking, but the lightweight packaging can hold significant moisture against the fruit, despite blueberries’ high water content. Val Riley, founder of Lovely Lucky Life, says switching from plastic to glass mason jars helps the berries stay fresh longer, with less mush and mould. The approach involves rinsing blueberries before refrigeration, drying them thoroughly, and storing them with a single sheet of kitchen roll inside a glass jar. With lids kept loosely ajar to let humidity escape, blueberries may last one to two weeks beyond typical shelf life, potentially helping cut food waste.
