Man buys abandoned jet from Facebook Marketplace but his worst fears are realized when he discovers it requires a seven-figure repair bill
A YouTuber, Cleetus McFarland, bought an abandoned Falcon 20 from Facebook Marketplace for $15,000, a tempting price for a plane, but the jet came with a long list of problems from tires to interiors to engines that would hinder flight. The aircraft had not flown since 2008 and preliminary estimates to return it to airworthiness reached seven figures, with a reported figure near $2.5 million.
McFarland presented followers with options, including investing millions to make the jet fly or disassembling it for display at his racetrack, with parts available for about $20,000 each. Ultimately, he chose to sell the jet back to its original owner, ending what he described as a challenging investment. The episode illustrates the high costs of resurrecting abandoned airplanes and contrasts with viral car-projects that sometimes yield successful restorations.
