Mystery surrounds bizarre 'El Chapo' letters sent to federal court in Brooklyn, NY
A mystery surrounds letters allegedly signed by Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán that were sent to federal court in Brooklyn, New York, while the cartel leader is housed in strict isolation at ADX Florence in Colorado. More than 20 letters have been received, with the first dated April 10 and the latest posted Tuesday on the docket of the Eastern District of New York. The handwritten messages, in English, reportedly complain about the fairness of his 2019 prosecution and ask to be sent back to Mexico. Defense attorney Mariel Colón Miró says the team is investigating who is sending the letters and that attorneys played no role, citing U.S. sources noting the envelopes were postmarked in Jackson, Mississippi, not Colorado. The letters have sparked online mockery and questions about whether Guzmán can communicate in English or is sending coded messages from prison.
