Geita Region's cooperative sector has become a central pillar of rural economy, uniting farmers, traders, and smallholders. The region has 629 registered cooperatives with 50,088 members; 304 are active and compliant. Beyond members, cooperatives indirectly support more than 35,519 farmers by providing inputs and access to markets. The network includes 243 AMCOS, 17 mining cooperatives, four horticultural groups, and 28 active SACCOS, though many are dormant or underperforming. A April 2026 forum in Katoro highlighted mixed performance and reform needs for revival across Geita's cooperative sector. Assistant Registrar Doreen Mwanri described ongoing dormancy and financial sustainability challenges facing several cooperatives and their member associations. The MUVU digital platform aims to streamline registration, monitoring, and cooperative management.
