Oil prices gain and Asian shares are mixed after a rally on Wall Street
Asian markets were mixed Tuesday after a rally on Wall Street, supported by easing oil prices. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 0.3% to close at 63,957.53 as the U.S. dollar rose to 157.70 yen from 157.18. The euro was $1.1515. Investors were also still processing the impact of last week’s joint U.S.-Japan currency intervention, with analysts noting uncertainty about whether such steps address underlying drivers like inflation, interest rates and relative economic strength. South Korea’s Kospi rose 1.6% to 6,358.95 and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 1.4% to 9,145.80, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.6%. Energy markets: U.S. crude gained 12 cents to $80.46; Brent rose 69 cents to $84.46. On Monday, U.S. stocks climbed as oil weakness calmed inflation concerns.
