Oyez! Nuneaton's hope in winning a World Cup 2026 tournament with a difference - VANNY RADIO
Nuneaton and Bedworth’s hopes for a World Cup 2026-style event for town criers center on Paul Gough, a local town crier for nearly 40 years. Gough, known for his “oyezs” and rhymes at borough events and his role at major royal jubilee celebrations, was named Freeman of the Borough in 2024. He will join 24 other international competitors at the World Cup of Town Criers in Chester from September 22 to 26. Competitors will be judged over three rounds on themes including a hometown cry, assessing vocal proficiency, confidence, bearing, content, and audience engagement. The event is free to watch, with awards such as Best Dressed Crier and a final overall champion on the last day. Marketing Cheshire and Chester Zoo officials said the tournament returns after more than a decade and showcases Chester to visitors.
