Ray White chief economist Nerida Conisbee says Australia’s spring selling season will hinge largely on whether interest rates rise again. Buyers have stayed on the sidelines as they weigh uncertainty around rates and falling prices, and Conisbee expects demand to remain muted if a hike occurs later this month. McGrath Estate Agents chief John McGrath, however, says buyer confidence is improving and that many buyers see the market “bottom” of the price correction, with an estimated buying window of 6–12 months. Listings are rising, but distressed sales under lender pressure remain limited. Conisbee expects cheaper segments to perform more slowly this spring, while top-end markets may hold up better.
