Rays take advantage of Royals error, other opportunities to roll to win

Tampa Bay’s Rays capitalized on a Royals miscue to keep their season moving after a rough stretch of results. In Thursday’s 5–3 win at Tampa, Fla., an errant throw home by Kansas City first baseman Jac Caglianone in the third inning led to two runs and helped ignite a small-ball rally. The Rays, who had been losing 18 of their past 27 games and scoring three or fewer runs 14 times, also added two more runs in the fourth after defensive miscues by Taylor Walls and Chandler Simpson. Griffin Jax worked five innings, allowing two unearned runs, while Bryan Baker earned his 20th save. The win gave Tampa a chance at first back-to-back victories in more than two weeks.
