Rep. Tom Kean Jr. Runs Anti-Congressional Stock Trade Mailers As He Trades Stocks
Rep. Tom Kean Jr. is using taxpayer-funded mailers in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District to argue he supports banning individual stock trading by members of Congress. The mailers, sent this month, cite Kean’s backing of legislation to prohibit such trades, but they omit that Kean has been one of the most active House stock traders this year. According to an analysis by The Washington Sun, he has bought or sold individual stocks at least 44 times in 2026, trading every month and even during the nearly four-month period he left office with limited explanation. Kean later said he underwent treatment for depression. Disclosures claim third-party advisers handled the trades without his input, though each filing is signed digitally by Kean. He previously declined to place his assets in a House-approved “qualified blind trust.” The House passed the Stop Insider Trading Act in July on a largely party-line vote, which would bar members from purchasing individual publicly traded stocks.
