The market for a garage door? Here are some tips from Berkshire-area experts
The market for new garage doors is prompting pre-purchase decisions around materials, insulation, hardware and safety checks, according to Berkshire-area experts interviewed in the article. Douglas Delphia of American Garage Door Sales, serving customers for more than 40 years, said buyers often choose between steel and wood, with wood typically costing more and requiring more maintenance, though it offers natural curb appeal and greater customization. Insulation is another factor: he noted that about 90% of his customers select an R-value of 8.3 and suggested savings by avoiding higher ratings unless the garage sits over areas where heat or air conditioning loss would be problematic. He recommended at least two inches of door thickness for durability and energy efficiency, and discussed window choices for privacy. Michael Madsen, vice president at Madsen Overhead Doors in Spencertown, warned of industry scammers and urged consumers to use reputable companies. An employee from Overhead Door Co. of Pittsfield also referenced belt versus chain opener drives.
