In Brisbane, the bar for being among the top 1% of income earners is now more than $2.3 million a year on average, based on Australian Taxation Office data for 2022-23. Five years ago, Pullenvale was the highest-ranking suburb for those earners, but it has since slipped to seventh. Traditional “blue-chip” areas Ascot and Hamilton have taken over the top spot, with the highest earners averaging $2.2 million. Brookfield, Hendra and Yeronga have dropped out of the top 10, replaced by Fig Tree Pocket, Newstead and Norman Park. The ranking reflects pre-tax incomes and can be distorted by a small number of ultra-wealthy residents.
