Waymo Just Recalled 3,800 Robotaxis. Is Google's Self-Driving Dream Hitting a Wall?
Waymo’s recall of 3,871 robotaxis in the United States after a software glitch highlights the operational risks in Google’s self-driving ambitions. The issue sent vehicles into closed freeway construction zones, and it marks the second recall in weeks for Alphabet’s autonomous-driving unit. The correction is described as a software patch affecting fewer than four thousand cars, while Waymo’s broader activity level remains tied to CEO Sundar Pichai’s claim on April 29, 2026 that Waymo surpassed 500,000 fully autonomous rides per week. Alphabet’s Other Bets context shows Q1 2026 revenue of $411 million alongside an operating loss that widened to $3.6 billion. Funding remains substantial, with Alphabet leading a $16 billion Waymo round in February 2026 and planning $175–$185 billion of full-year 2026 guidance. Alphabet shares were below $350 after the recall news.
