After 53 years, the New York Knicks are NBA champions. And the wait sure seemed worth it
The New York Knicks have claimed the NBA title for the first time since 1973, ending a 53-year wait with a 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in five games. The clinching win featured the Knicks’ fourth comeback of the series and came on a night when Knicks owner James Dolan grabbed the 30-pound gold-plated trophy and saluted New York with an emotional pledge that the championship would not take another generation to return. New York also overcame a 29-point deficit to win Game 4 at Madison Square Garden, underscoring the team’s resilience en route to the title. Commissioner Adam Silver lauded the feat, calling it extraordinary and highlighting the franchise’s unlikely journey through 24 coaches and more than 400 players since its last crown.
