Atlanta Boosts Security for England-Argentina Game
Atlanta is expanding security operations ahead of Wednesday’s FIFA World Cup semifinal between England and Argentina at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta Police Department officials said the match is being treated as the tournament’s highest-risk game due to the historic rivalry and the large expected turnout of supporters. The department stated it has strengthened its citywide public safety posture, deploying additional personnel and resources around event venues, entertainment districts and other high-traffic areas, with officers remaining in place before, during and after the match. Exact staffing numbers were not disclosed. Officials cited security concerns after social-media videos over the weekend showed small groups of fans clashing in Miami following England’s quarterfinal win over Norway. The report also says the UK will not send additional officers to the U.S.; instead, a three-member UK Football Policing Unit delegation already in the country will work with U.S. law enforcement. FIFA said comprehensive security plans remain in place for remaining matches and that there have been no major incidents.
