Brittney Griner Files For Divorce From Wife Cherelle, Who Publicly Fought For Her Release From Russian Prison, After 8 Years Of Marriage

WNBA star Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife of eight years, Cherelle Griner, according to court records in Fulton County, Georgia, dated July 30. The filing states the couple married in June 2018 and set their separation date as July 24, 2026, clarifying earlier claims that they married in 2019. Brittney and Cherelle met while both were students at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. In the petition, Griner, who plays for the Connecticut Sun, described the marriage as “irretrievably broken” and is seeking joint legal custody of their two-year-old son, Bash. Cherelle had been a prominent advocate during Brittney’s Russia detention in February 2022, after vape cartridges with cannabis oil led to a nine-year sentence. Brittney was released in December 2022. Neither side has publicly commented on the divorce since it became public.
