Bulldogs look to continue momentum
St. Pauls’ Bulldogs are looking to maintain their momentum after finishing last season atop Robeson County with a 10-2 record and reaching the third round of the 5A state playoffs. After an eight-win campaign the year before, the program completed a revamp following a spring 2021 appearance in the state championship. Coach Mike Setzer said the staff is focused on keeping coaching continuity and implementing what worked previously, with assistants including Dominique Bridges and Hunter Lowry. The team scored more than 30 points in eight games and recorded five defensive shutouts, averaging over 32 points per game while allowing about 16. In the past two seasons they have combined an 18-5 record, a marked improvement from 12-11 in the prior two-year span. Setzer emphasized the Bulldogs are “not satisfied.” Defensive tackle Antwan McKoy, a rising senior, committed to Georgia, and the program’s success has also generated broader school pride, according to principal Jason Suggs. St. Pauls also highlighted sustained county dominance, with their last in-county loss recorded on Sept. 27, 2019 against Fairmont.
