A Vancouver-based group has gone public with its bid to bring the WNBA’s 19th franchise to Canada, aiming to be ready as the league’s expansion window evolves. Led by retired business executive Bill Bakk, the group said it has not yet submitted a formal offer, but expects to solidify its plan over the next one or two years. The group projects a Vancouver team in 2031, after the latest expansion round ends, when Detroit is set to return. A league source said no additional expansion is planned beyond what’s already been announced, though Bakk says conversations within the “WNBA ecosystem” suggest the idea is feasible.
