College Football Playoff nears deal to expand to 24-team format

The College Football Playoff is nearing an agreement to expand from 12 teams to 24, ESPN reports, with sources saying the framework would begin in 2027 pending final approvals. ESPN says it and the CFP are close on figures for an expansion deal beginning with the 2027 season. According to information shared with On3’s Pete Nakos, the first two rounds would be played at home sites, while the quarterfinals, semifinals and national championship would be held at neutral venues. The top eight seeds would receive byes, and automatic berths would go to the Power Four conference champions plus the top Group of Six champion.
