College Football Playoff to expand to 24-team starting in 2027 | Reports

The College Football Playoff is reportedly nearing a deal to expand to a 24-team field starting with the 2027 season, according to multiple reports Thursday, Oct. 15. ESPN, which initially broke the news, says details of the format are still unclear because adding 12 more teams would require fitting an extra round into a crowded December schedule. The current 12-team playoff is in its third season after expanding from four teams in 2024, and the system traces back to 2014. ESPN also reports it is finalizing an agreement with the CFP through 2031 to purchase the additional games.
