The statement references wider criticism during the tournament, including claims that Argentina benefited from favorable refereeing decisions. Egypt’s Hossam Hassan and player Mostafa Ziko publicly amplified conspiracy theories following Egypt’s 3-2 loss to Argentina in the last 16, while FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer Pierluigi Collina denied the allegations and defended referee François Letexier, saying unfounded claims have no place in the sport.
