FIFA make unusual World Cup change for semi-finals and final
FIFA is introducing an unusual change for the closing stages of the 2026 World Cup by switching the match ball for the semi-finals and final. According to the report, the earlier rounds used the Trionda ball, which drew criticism because goalkeepers reportedly struggled to read its flight, resulting in goals from longer-range shots. FIFA says this is the first time in World Cup history that a new ball is used in the late stages of the competition. The “Trionda Final” is described as a visual update rather than a change to performance, moving from multi-colored design to black and gold. Adidas says the ball keeps the same construction focused on performance, while the artwork includes names of venues still hosting matches: Atlanta, Miami, Dallas and New York. The ball will be used for the first time in the France vs Spain semi-final.
