Gana urges Ramaphosa to intervene over law enforcement tensions
Gana urges Ramaphosa to intervene over law enforcement tensions reports South African MP Rise Mzansi and Section 89 committee chair Makashule Gana calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to act over worsening tensions inside the country’s criminal justice system. Gana says disputes between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) are eroding public confidence. He points to senior police generals challenging IDAC’s authority and reportedly filing an urgent complaint with the Minister of Justice over an ongoing corruption investigation linked to allegations of corruption in police recruitment processes. The allegations reportedly persist despite a prior SAPS probe clearing the recruitment panel. The IDAC has allegedly delayed planned arrests, citing national security concerns and the risk of unrest tied to demonstrations on June 30. Forensic investigator Chad Thomas argues this reflects broader problems and possible “bad actors” across multiple agencies, while Gana warns that continued infighting could weaken trust.
