How Mavericks rookie Morez Johnson Jr.'s alter ego propelled him to the NBA

Morez Johnson Jr., the Mavericks’ No. 9 overall pick in the 2026 NBA draft, is profiled as more than a highlight-reel big man. The 6-10 forward from Riverdale, Illinois, has a “Clark Kent and Superman” duality: shy and quiet off the court, but an aggressive competitor once games start. Raised in a high-crime area of about 10,000 residents roughly 20 miles south of Chicago, Johnson’s parents kept him largely indoors, using activities like STEM kits and structured entertainment to limit trouble. At Washington Elementary, an early workout became symbolic of his alter ego. Dallas is banking on Johnson, who helped Michigan win a national championship under new head coach Dusty May, to help turn the franchise around.
