Iceland doesn't have a military. It was just ranked the most peaceful country in the world.

Iceland has no military, yet it was ranked the world’s most peaceful country in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), according to an analysis published after Business Insider compiled the GPI-based standings. The June report assessed 163 countries across 23 indicators grouped into ongoing conflicts, societal safety and security, and militarization. Iceland placed at the top overall for the 19th consecutive year, finishing well ahead of other European nations in the top 10. The island state earned the best scores in both conflict and militarization categories, and it ranked third behind Finland and Norway for societal safety and security. It is also the only NATO member without a standing army, navy, or air force, instead relying on the Coast Guard and police, plus NATO support and a defense arrangement with the United States. In terms of violence, the GPI noted a 43% improvement in violent demonstrations, and it cited a homicide rate of one per 100,000 in 2023 versus five worldwide and six in the U.S.
