Inflation in May climbed to its highest level in three years, driven largely by energy costs and related price increases. The Labor Department reported consumer prices up 4.2% from a year earlier, after a 3.8% rise in April, marking the third straight monthly advance. Energy led the gains, with fuel oil up 59% and gasoline up 41% year over year, while airline fares increased 27%. Food inflation was also higher, though not as dramatic, and prices for new and used cars were flat or slightly down.
