Injured, $8 million sidelined: The brutal NBL toll exposed
Australia’s NBL injury crisis is worsening, with 40 players sidelined so far this season and more than $8 million in talent unavailable, according to league figures cited in the report. Brian Goorjian, the Sydney Kings head coach and a seven-time title winner, warned that the competition’s intensity may be driven by a travel schedule harsher than the NBA’s regular-season rhythm, plus a physically demanding style. He compared the NBL’s travel—Melbourne on Sunday, Perth on Wednesday, then Launceston in Tasmania on Friday—to what the NFL has said about travel, arguing it’s far greater in the NBL. Goorjian also pointed to full-court defending and a pace averaging higher points allowed than in the NBA regular season. Vince Crivelli said the league isn’t at “crisis” levels and is monitoring injury trends.
