Joe Haden reveals the brutal reason so many NFL stars go broke after $50 million paydays
Former NFL cornerback Joe Haden explained why many players can feel rich after large contracts but later discover that the money doesn’t translate directly into cash kept. In a post on KRL, Haden, who played for the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers, said his first major deal was a five-year, $50 million contract with about $26.6 million guaranteed. He described how his $12 million signing bonus shrank after taxes to roughly $7 million. Haden then said he gave his parents $3 million, bought them a $1 million house, and purchased cars for his brothers and a penthouse for himself. He also referenced luxury buys including a Range Rover Sport and a Bentley GT, warning that people misunderstand what the headline value represents. He added that he realized elite contracts may leave someone with around $1 million after all factors, though he stated he was not claiming he ended broke. Cleveland drafted him seventh overall in 2010, and he later signed a five-year, $68 million extension with the Browns.
