Kentucky Looking to Crack Third Down Conundrum
xCruzo Brief
Kentucky enters its next challenge with an obvious statistical problem: third downs. The Wildcats (4-1) rank last nationally on third down, converting less than 25% of attempts, while their defense sits at No. 122 out of 138 FBS programs, allowing opponents to move the chains on 45.9% of tries. Will Stein, speaking Monday, said the team is focused on improving fundamentals tied to getting off the field and sustaining drives—specifically “throwing and catching,” protecting the quarterback, and creating mobility when Kenny Minchey runs in space on second downs. Stein also noted the issue is partly affected by context: Kentucky has had only 53 third-down attempts all season, fewer than all but three teams through five games.
