Komnas HAM Urges Papua Ceasefire as Civilian Casualties Mount
Komnas HAM urges Papua ceasefire as civilian casualties mount, with the Indonesian human rights commission calling for immediate steps to stop armed conflict in the region. On July 6, 2026, Komnas HAM chair Anis Hidayah said the government should take serious measures, including a ceasefire, arguing that civilians have been the most vulnerable victims in past ceasefires in Papua. She condemned the July 2 shooting of an American pilot, Nicolas F. Goseling, in Intan Jaya, including the killing of a pregnant woman. Komnas HAM also urged authorities to uphold the rule of law by providing restitution to victims’ families and ensuring investigations with broad access for the commission. The incident followed a claim of responsibility by TPNPB-OPM, and the Indonesian armed forces deployed a special operation tied to the Ipdeheik airstrip in Yakuhimo, as well as another clash in Intan Jaya’s Sugapa district.
