Korea's World Cup team members guaranteed $52,000 payouts despite humiliating exit - The Korea Times
Korea’s World Cup team members are guaranteed $52,000 payouts despite a humiliating group-stage exit, according to The Korea Times. The 26-man squad led by coach Hong Myung-bo will each receive 80 million won (about $52,000) after finishing third in Group A with one win and two losses. Korea was eliminated after 1-0 defeats to Mexico and South Africa, following a 2-1 opening win over the Czech Republic, ending with three points and a negative goal differential. The 34th-place finish out of 48 teams is Korea’s worst ever at a World Cup. Under the Korea Football Association bonus structure, players receive 50 million won plus 30 million won for the Czech win, while draw money was available but unused. The KFA will pay 2.08 billion won total, and higher payments tied to advancement and promised payments by KFA president Chung Mong-gyu were canceled.
