Lions nearing decision on Week 1 starter at left guard vs. Saints
The Detroit Lions haven’t fully decided who will start at left guard for their Week 1 game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Sept. 13. Head coach Dan Campbell said he’s still weighing Christian Mahogany and Ben Bartch, though he suggested Mahogany “probably” gets the first start. After Campbell’s Tuesday, Sept. 8 comments that both players could see the field, the plan appears to be a split of reps during practices, with the possibility that “both play” if one doesn’t separate from the other. Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing said guard rotation is manageable and has been used before. Mahogany, a 2024 sixth-round pick, started 11 games last season. Bartch was signed in March after time with the Jaguars and 49ers and returned from a foot injury early in camp.
