LSU coach Lane Kiffin defended recruiting NFL players who want to play a fifth NCAA season, arguing “most” coaches will soon draw from the same pool. The approach is expected to make LSU the first FBS program to sign undrafted free agents released by NFL teams. Tight end Dae’Quan Wright—who played for Kiffin at Mississippi—plans to join LSU after clearing NFL waivers; he was most recently with the Cleveland Browns and was waived Monday. Another addition, former Mississippi defensive lineman Zxavian Harris, was waived by the New Orleans Saints and said via Instagram he intends to join LSU, calling it a “business decision.” A Louisiana court granted a temporary restraining order last week tied to the NCAA’s age-based eligibility model, allowing 15 players an extra year via the transfer portal. Kiffin said a judge effectively ruled they were wronged and should get the fifth year, and he cited federal involvement in Mississippi’s offices after Kiffin’s move.
